From its beginnings in a small Davis apartment in 1982, Blackwater Bikes has grown into one of West Virginia’s premier bike shops. Davis is conveniently located in the heart of hundreds of miles of single track trails, railroad grades, and dirt roads–including several major trail systems through the Blackwater Canyon, the Monongahela National Forest, and the Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge.
Davis is known as an outdoor lover’s paradise with a vibrant business and trail community. We have seven lodging options on-site through Blackwater Bed and Bike, two State Parks with lodging and campgrounds, primitive camping, and lots of other places to stay. In town, there are great restaurants, breweries and quaint shops and live music.
If you are planning a mountain biking vacation to this beautiful slice of countryside, we can assist in making your WV mountain biking experience a memorable one. Need a rental or a repair? We have both: top quality rental bikes and a full-service repair department with highly trained mechanics to help get you back out onto the trail.
THE TEAM

Matt Marcus
Matt is our manager and main man. He’s been a bike fiend since he could say the word bike. He has been a mechanic, service manager, tour guide, racer, team manager, support team, and bike shop owner, formerly owning Blackwater Bikes from 1990 to 2000. Living in Davis since 1988, Matt continues to give his heart and soul to our bike community.

Sue Haywood
Sue first threw a leg over a mountain bike as a sophomore at WVU, then moved to Davis in 1993 and did the 24 Hours of Canaan for the first time. She was hooked. She started racing the West Virginia Mountain Bike Series and eventually turned professional in 1998. A fruitful career followed, with six National Championships, two Pan American Championships, and one World Championship in 24 Hour racing, as well as an Olympic bid.
Sue serves our “Front of the House,” welcoming customers, sharing deep trail knowledge and bike stoke, and taking care of our retail orders. She is also an important thread in our community, serving as president of the Blackwater Bicycle Association and founder of the Canaan MTB Festival.

Jacob Muscavage
Jacob’s passion for bikes and understanding how things work is as old as he is. Lore has it that Jacob learned to ride a bike before he could walk and true a wheel before he could read. So, it was more than synchronicity when Jacob started his bike mechanic career at Pathfinder in Morgantown, WV, in 2012. In 2014, Jacob moved to Hawaiʻi, where he worked on e-bikes, conducted property surveys, and dabbled with astrophysics. In 2019, Jacob returned to the mainland and expanded his job experience to include horticulture. All the while, Jacob continued to build bikes, shred trails, and attempt to wheelie on a fat bike.
The stars aligned in 2024 when Jacob moved to Davis and became our mechanic extraordinaire. He has been bleeding brakes and tightening headsets ever since. When not at the shop, you can find Jacob doing one of his many outdoor hobbies, tending bonsai, or playing cards at the Adventure Guild.

Tom Kotarsky
Tom’s roots run deep in the bicycle world, from his racing days in the West Virginia Mountain Bike Association expert class and his first service manager job at Wamsley’s in Morgantown in 1988 to his role as service manager at Blackwater Bikes from 1992 to 1999.
Tom moved on to a career as a Paramedic in Randolph County, while also working ski patrol in the winters. When he retired, he bought a 40-acre farm in Tucker County called Sapling Ridge Farm. He raises goats, cattle, and chickens with his wife, Patsy, and four kids. He continues to wrench for us part-time and still absolutely loves riding his Yeti SB150.

Roger Lilly
Known for his quick wit and being a straight shooter, Roger Lilly is one of a kind. Roger started riding in the 1990’s and hasn’t stopped, preferring his gravel bike nowadays. Roger owned the bike shop from 2000-2015 and still wrenches when we need him.
